Prestigious literary award conferred on Humphrey Alumnus

Humphrey alumnus Kuladhar Saikia was conferred India’s prestigious literary award, the 2015 Sahitya Akademi award, for his collection of short stories, “Portrait of the Sky and Other Stories” written in his native Assamese language.

"Writing makes you a very sensitive person which has helped me in my law enforcement professional service which very often needs a person with sensitive heart and mind," said Mr. Saikia, who is the additional director general of police in Assam. Mr. Saikia is also famous for his initiative called "Prahari" (Sentinel), a relentless campaign against the social evil of witch-hunting. The campaign has helped to infuse a sense of empowerment in women who were earlier discriminated against.
