He is Board certified Pediatrician and Board Certified Neonatologist. He is currently affiliated with the University of Illinois where he is an Emeritus Professor in the department of pediatrics. He developed a world renowned Academic Program in Neonatology at University of Illinois at Chicago, during service of 36 years. He has published over 200 papers, and several books. His area of research focuses on improving neonatal care and reduction of Neonatal and Infant Mortality. His other major contributions in the field include work in developing countries: China, India, Poland, Lithuania, and Uzbekistan.
As a Fulbright-Nehru visiting lecturer Dr. Dharamapuri during his time in India will focus on the neo-natal research. High IMR in India is a major concern. Neonatal Mortality constitutes 2/3 of IMR. Thus there is a need to focus on improving neonatal care at every level of health facility. Dr. Vidyasagar strongly feels that Academic Medical Institutions in India have a great opportunity to accelerate implementing programmers that improve NMR and IMR. There is a need for capacity building of Health care personnel, specifically the doctors in understanding the problems of newborn and recognizing them early and initiating early management. He proposes to conduct series of lecture, and workshops at several Medical Colleges in AP and other states of India.
