| Professor Geraldine Forbes is a Distinguished Teaching Professor at the department of history, State University of New York Oswego. Professor Forbes earned her B.Ed. from the University of Alberta. She earned her Master's degree and Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois. Professor Forbes began her research in Bengal over three decades ago. Her first book, "Positivism in Bengal" was selected for the Rabindra Puraskar. She has extensively written on history and lives of Indian women. Her publication includes "Shudha Mazumdar: Memoirs of an Indian Woman" (1989), "Manmohini Zutshi Sahgal: An Indian Freedom Fighter Recalls her Life" (1994), "Women in Modern India" (1996), for the New Cambridge History of India, and "Women in colonial India: Essays on Politics, Medicine and Historiography" (2005). Her most recent book, "Because I am a Woman": Child Widow: A Memoir from Colonial India" (2010), with Tapan Raychaudhuri, is the translated and edited memoirs of Hamabati Sen. At present she is engaged in three research projects: "Photographic Imagery in the History of Indian Woman", "In Search of Elokeshi: the Tarakeswar Murder Case of 1873", and "Samuel Alden Perrine and the "Wild Head-Hunters" of Northeast India".
As a Fulbright-Nehru visiting lecturer Professor Forbes will be associated with the Calcutta University where she will be offering two courses i) Gender and History and ii) Gender and Visual History to M.Phil and Ph.D. students. In 2010, Tejpur University inaugurated the "Memory, Movement and the Mahila Samiti" in "Assam Project" and have asked Professor Forbes to consult with them on their work. |
