Brief Bio:
Dr. Joseli Macedo is at present associated with the University of Florida as an Assistant Professor at the department of urban and regional planning. She earned her undergraduate degree in architecture and urbanism from the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR—Universidade Federal do Paraná) in Brazil and her Master's of community planning, with emphasis on international development planning, from the University of Cincinnati.. She worked for several years as an architect and urbanist and received her certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners in 1996 before returning to academia to pursue a doctoral degree. She has taught in two private Universities in Curitiba for three years in Brazil. Dr. Macedo has continued working in her two major areas of interest: international development and urban design. She teaches a seminar and a studio that focus on these topics and she also directs a study abroad program in Brazil every summer. She has served on 46 Master thesis committees and 16 Doctoral dissertation committees. Her two areas of interest unite her research and teaching and serve as a foundation for her interest in developing human habitats that respect the natural environment. Dr. Macedo has presented her research work at national and international conferences; she has received almost a half million dollars in funding; and her research has yielded over 20 publications, including refereed articles in Cities, Land Use Policy, Housing and Society, Housing Studies, and a UN-Habitat Global Report on Human Settlements. Her work has been recognized by invitations to lecture nationally and internationally, to serve as guest editor of two journals, and to review several articles and books.

The purpose of Dr. Macedo's Fulbright-Nehru research in India is to develop new knowledge about water resources in urban areas, particularly urban rivers and streams. The research is related to urban sustainability, of which water is a critical component as we need to devise better ways to protect urban streams. Dr. Macedo intends to study urbanization using the watershed as the planning unit, rather than political boundaries. Experience has shown that land use controls within watersheds are no guarantee of water source protection. She further intends to recommend possible solutions for Indian cities that could be emulated in other urban areas of the developing world.
