Fellowships

Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Lecturer

The visiting lecturer fellowships for four to six months are designed for US faculty, researchers and professionals. Applications from all disciplines will be considered. Priority fields are: Agricultural Sciences; Economics; Education; Energy, Sustainable Development and Climate Change; Environment; International Relations; Management and Leadership Development; Media and Communications with focus on Public Service Broadcasting; Public Administration; Public Health; Science and Technology; Study of India with focus on contemporary issues; and Study of the United States. For Study of India or the Study of the United States (American Studies) the areas could include: language and literature, history, government, economics, society and culture, religion, and film studies.

A comparative or cross cultural perspective is encouraged. US academics and professionals contribute to internationalization of the curriculum at their Indian host institutions and understanding of recent developments in the US. The recipient will be affiliated as a visiting scholar at an Indian college, university or research institution, and will teach courses or offer a series of seminars at the Indian host institution

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has received approximately 200 requests from Indian institutions interested in hosting a US Fulbright-Nehru teacher on their campus. USIEF will work with applicants after selection to arrange host institution affiliation. Applicants willing to be affiliated at an institution outside major metropolitan areas are encouraged to indicate this in their applications.

The higher education sector in India is currently going through a phase of expansion and revamping. Under the initiative of the Government of India and the private sector, several new educational institutions are being established.

Teaching in India will take place at different types of universities and colleges that vary in terms of academic/administrative arrangements. Most of the colleges and universities are emphasizing new methods of pedagogy, specifically interactive methods, group-work and project-based learning. Indian institutions would welcome visiting scholars who can contribute in these areas.

Indian institutions, with the exception of some of the highly reputed technical and management schools, have loosely structured teaching schedules that require adaptability and initiative on the part of American teachers. In general, undergraduate colleges tend to make optimum use of visiting teachers, so USIEF uses them widely for our teacher placements. Community college faculties are eligible for affiliation with undergraduate colleges.

Because of year-end examinations and vacations, teaching is not possible in the majority of Indian institutions from March/April through June/July. Applicants should take this into consideration in proposing dates for the grant period to ensure that there is sufficient teaching time.

During their grant period, Fulbright Scholars in the SCA region may apply for a regional travel grant to give lectures at institutions in other SCA countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). This grant will cover travel to and from the destination; lodging may be offered by the hosting university. Scholars may apply for this grant once in-country on their grant, however, they may identify a host institution in advance. As funds are limited, scholars are limited to one such grant.
