Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research

The Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Awards provide opportunities for US faculty and practicing professionals to conduct research in area of interest, including, but not limited to, any of the preferred areas of contemporary study involving mutual interests of India and the United States. These include: Agricultural Sciences, Economics, Education, Energy, Sustainable Development and Climate Change, Environment, International Relations, Management and Leadership Development, Media and Communications with focus on Public Service Broadcasting, Public Administration, Public Health, Science and Technology and Study of India with focus on contemporary issues.

According to the Government of India guidelines, each candidate will be affiliated with an Indian institution of higher education for carrying out the proposed project work and will be guided or assisted by an academic supervisor. It is recommended that applicants identify appropriate host institutions for their projects, but they are not required to correspond with the host institutions prior to applying. If they have been in touch with potential host institutions, applicants should include any correspondence, such as letters of invitation with their Fulbright-Nehru applications. The Fulbright Commission in India (United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) will confirm final affiliations for candidates awarded Fulbright-Nehru grants.

Appropriate placements will be arranged for persons selected for awards who have not made prior contact with an Indian institution at the time of applying.

The Commission will consider a few serial grants for 2012-13, which will allow the grant to be divided into shorter in-country stays over 2 consecutive years. In the case of a serial grant, the total number of months cannot exceed 4. A maximum of two round-trip airfares for the grantee only will be provided for serial grantees.

This is an effort to increase participation from US scholars by increasing the flexibility of the grant. Serial grants will allow scholars to come to India and not have to request a full semester of sabbatical leave.

During their grant period, Fulbright Scholars in the SCA region may apply for a regional travel grant to give lectures at institutions in other SCA countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal, Pakistan, Republic of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan). This grant will cover travel to and from the destination; lodging may be offered by the hosting university. Scholars may apply for this grant once in-country on their grant, however, they may identify a host institution in advance. As funds are limited, scholars are limited to one such grant.
