Study Objectives:
As a journalist/writer, I am interested in the study of feminist theory and practice. In my six years of reporting on various issues across the country, I became sharply aware that gender, as a hierarchical division, defines and governs social institutions and practices, and most of all, our everyday lives. Yet, media reportage of gender issues is often relegated to either stereotyping, and/or a patriarchal understanding of gender equality. Today, Indian policymakers are aggressively debating inclusive growth and social welfare, and women's empowerment is a crucial part of the policy discourse. Thus, I feel a deeper understanding of gender issues and feminist politics acquired during the Master's program in the U.S. will help me bring forth key debates for people at large, as well as influence policy interventions.
