Study Objectives:
As a copy editor at The Times of India, Kolkata, I closely monitored stories as they broke, be it the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks or Maoist activities in West Bengal. The 2002 Godhra communal riots showed me that human reactions can fluctuate from compassion to violent bigotry with alarming rapidity and influenced my desire to communicate significantly. In the current fluid state of being, my larger aim as a journalist is to consistently produce such work that can make readers a little more tolerant than they presently are.

My focus is to excel at long-form magazine writing and write compelling human-interest and developmental stories concerning marginalized sections like women, children and senior citizens. I believe such subjects concern all communities irrespective of their socio-political or religious leanings and can be a catalyst to promote dialogue between polarized groups.

The Fulbright fellowship has given me access to a competitive academic environment and brought me closer to these goals. While pursuing MS program in America, I look forward to rigorous field work and numerous opportunities to interact with distinguished media professionals. This will hone my skill-set and prepare me to live up to the expectations of my profession.
